When the well is dry, we know the worth of water.
– Benjamin Franklin
On the occasion of the Earth Day, to sensitize the Mitconites towards imminent reality of water scarcity various activities were conducted on 21.04.21.
Water body covers three-fourth of the Earth’s surface. 97 per cent of this water is unfit for human consumption as it is present in oceans as salt water. So it is very important to conserve this precious resource and yet we are tainting the existing water resources with toxic chemicals, sewage and other wastes. Rapid urbanisation has led to over-use of water resources leading to water contamination and inadequacy.
We integrated arts and craft to make our students understand this reality in a fun way. The drawing competition was held for grades 1 and 2 students depicting the message that- ‘Each Water Drop Is Priceless’. The drawings were judged using the criteria of Creativity, Presentation, Concept knowledge and Neatness. The documentary was also shown to the students on ‘What if we drain the Oceans?’ to make them alert of consequence without water on the earth.
To give a message to their peers about importance of water, grade 3 to 5 students had a slogan writing competition on the theme ‘Save each drop’. Writing slogans is a best way to give the message in fewer words but profound impact. Few examples of the slogans written by our students are
Don’t let water run in the sink, Our life is on the brink
Save each drop- No water- No life
Let’s do our part to save every drop
A drop of water is more important than the sack of gold to a thirsty man.
Students were enlightened on different methods we all can follow to save clean drinking water to deal with the water scarcity as fix your leaks, flush with less water, turn off tap while brushing, bathe for short duration, use bucket instead of shower etc.
Rain water harvesting is one of the most effective and suitable method among save water techniques, it was used in almost every drawing and slogan.
For the students of grade 6 to 9, essay writing competition was conducted on various subjects like Importance of biodiversity in your vicinity, Growing up with biodiversity, Biodiversity–An innovative tool for nation’s progress and Conservation of biodiversity– Measures at individual level.
These next gen citizens have penned their thoughts creatively for their theme of essay.
We as educators are pleased to see that our students received and understood the essential message that Water is the elixir of life, so we should save it to save life on the earth. We need water for many purposes in our daily walks of life. So, we should appreciate the value of water drops and save it.
