THE PATH OF THE FUTURE: SUSTAINABILITY
“We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.”
MIS International School focuses on sensitizing the students and inculcating empathy for mother earth and all its creatures. With this objective, various activities were conducted on 15 April 2021 under the theme “Green Lungs”.
To make this planet healthier, one needs to follow the three Rs- Reduce, Recycle and Reuse to make best out of the resources available. Following this mantra, preprimary Mitconites and students of grades 3 to 5 made bird feeders using recycled materials like, milk cartons, shoe boxes, egg containers, coconut shells and ice cream sticks for our feathery friends.
The need for a regular food source becomes more apparent as bird population booms in summer months. Making bird feeders is the best way to keep up the regular supply of food for birds. Students made bird feeders with vibrant colours, to ensure that the birds are attracted to them and it eases their search of food .
Students of grades 1 and 2 made paper bags to recycle the newspaper and gave the message- ‘Say no to plastic’ to save our planet from ever growing plastic clutter. The commonly used plastic bags have become an integral part and a natural choice of everyone’s life due to its versatility. The biggest drawback – its pollution is wreaking havoc on the planet.
A video was shown to the students to enlighten them about how plastic bags are non-biodegradable and how they have become a massive threat to our ecosystem. Since the convenience of plastic bags is now a threat that harms and causes unnatural death among wild animals and aquatic species, the students of MIS are promoting the use of paper bags.
There is no other better way to promote Green planet than making our young generation aware of their responsibilities. Students of grade 6 created Seed balls using paper mache paste with assorted seeds of native flowers/fruits/grains/pulses which when thrown on the patch of dirt will dissolve, planting the seeds conveniently, causing green plants growing from them. Students promoted it as a great gift idea. They also promised to use these seed balls to grow plants in barren areas around them.
Students of grades 7 to 9 had discussions on the topic –‘Generating energy using Natural resources’. They discussed the available natural resources and how to use them to generate energy without harming the environment. There was also a vibrant discussion about the energy alternatives available to us, including wind and tidal energy. The teachers informed the students about the process of energy production and its utilization, the energy chain etc. They discussed in depth about causes of depletion of natural resources and importance of judicious use of the same. Debates about the benefits and drawbacks of various forms of energy also made the class more informative.
This way all Mitconites enjoyed their activities in full manner and learnt a great deal about compassion and responsibility towards our planet to keep it healthy with ’Green Lungs’.
